Woman Loses Health Insurance Over Facebook Photo
A Canadian woman on sick leave for depression said Monday she would fight an insurance company's decision to cut her benefits after her agent found photos on Facebook of her vacationing, at a bar and at a party.
Nathalie Blanchard said Monday she was diagnosed with major depression and was receiving monthly sick-leave benefits until payments dried up this fall.
When Blanchard called her insurance provider, Manulife, to find out why, she says she was told the Facebook photos showed she was able to work.
"If you have insurance, be careful. This is a major battle and it's not going to be easy," Blanchard, 29, said in a telephone interview from her home in Bromont Quebec.
She said her insurance agent described several pictures Blanchard posted on Facebook, including ones showing her having a good time at a Chippendales bar show, at her birthday party and on a holiday.

Someone needs to fact check the titles of these stories - health insurance is NOT THE SAME AS DISABILITY BENEFITS. Of course, obama will use the title of this story and run with it. if this is true it amounts to FRAUD and others should not have to share in the cost of her fun times.

I realize this was Canada but it sounds like some type of disability that she was using and she got caught. Yes, depression is a very real diagnosis and needs very real treatment. This lady was stupid enough to post photos on Facebook. No sympathy here.

She didn't lose her health insurance, she lost her disability benefits. There is a difference. And while no one expects a disabled person to stay home all the time, activities should correlate with the information your providing your disability carrier. I'm sure there is more to the story.

Well she should loose here health care for two reasons. First she was vacationing instead of staying home sick, and second for being so stupid as to post the pictures of face book. She is a threat to society and shouldn't be allowed to reproduce. I rule in favor of the insurance company and order the woman to be immediatly incinerated.

Hold on this is private disability allowance with an insurance firm. Thats not Socialist at all. In the scary, socialist UK, people get half of their normal pay from their employer for 6 months then they can get 'means tested' incapacity benefit from the government for long term sick leave that is. So don't worry you're still a long way to the right.

As a Canadian she still has 100% health coverage. She is able to go to the doctor, have tests, be prescribed medication, etc.
Her private disability has been cut off because the insurance company felt that if she was able to vacation, etc and ALSO, post her activities online, then her depression was not preventing her from other activities, ie: a job.
She has computer and internet access which could be put to better use perhaps.

This woman did not lose "health" insurance. She lost "disability" insurance. They are 2 different things in Canada. No Canadian citizen can lose their healthcare for ANY reason. That is one of the great things about our system here in Canada. No pre-existing conditions, no maximum benefits, no insurance companies to deal with (and no. NO bureaucrats between us and our doctor). Our only worry is getting well again. We feel sorry for Americans who have to choose between their health and their monthly bills. It must be very frustrating knowing you pay more than any other country in the world for your healthcare and yet your outcomes are so poor in comparison. And I can't imagine if 45,000 of my fellow citizens were dying every year because they were underinsured or not insured at all. A catastrophic illness can happen to anyone at any time - it's sad that your system requires you to HOPE your insurance company pays for your medical costs and that you can't really count on them - just look at all the horror stories of denied coverage for ridiculous reasons!
