Just over a year into his tenure, America’s 44th president governs a bitterly divided nation, a world increasingly hard to manage and an America that seems more disillusioned than ever with Washington’s ways. What went wrong?
Pundits, Democratic lawmakers and opinion pollsters offer a smorgasbord of reasons – from Mr Obama’s decision to devote his first year in office to healthcare reform, to the president’s inability to convince voters he can “feel their [economic] pain”, to the apparent ungovernability of today’s Washington. All may indeed have contributed to the quandary in which Mr Obama finds himself. But those around him have a more specific diagnosis – and one that is striking in its uniformity. The Obama White House is geared for campaigning rather than governing, they say.
In dozens of interviews with his closest allies and friends in Washington – most of them given unattributably in order to protect their access to the Oval Office – each observes that the president draws on the advice of a very tight circle. The inner core consists of just four people – Rahm Emanuel, the pugnacious chief of staff; David Axelrod and Valerie Jarrett, his senior advisers; and Robert Gibbs, his communications chief. Clinton and his crew stopped regulation of custom-made derivatives COLD in the 90's. This dark market trading was a gambling operation.
Then we have Frank and ACORN who pushed poor people into housing they could NOT afford. What do you think these derivatives were? GE stock?
Brookley Born tried to warn the US of the IMPORTANCE of regulating custom-made derivatives, but was shot down by Greenspan, Levitt & Ruben, among others. The failure of these banks trading in the dark with these derivatives were a direct result of Clinton's inaction to listen to her and NOT to Greenspan.
How's that 'Let the markets work it out' plan working out for us now Alan?
She is now vindicated, but at a huge loss to the people of the US.
BTW, Two of the men who tore Born to shreds, who did NOT want regulation, NOW work in the OBAMA administration. You forgot to mention Geithners role in this fiasco, or was that just an oversight?

Another thing that helped cause the meltdown of housing was not regulatingfannie Mae and freddy Mac. bush told Congress they needed to put regulations on them but they refused so these two organizations did the same thing - loaned money to people who could not afford the houses. remmeber, these were Barney Franks' organizations. The Congress sitting at that time was the Democratic Congress , the same as is sitting today.

My question is why did Bush not attempt to correct this? His SEC did remove the uptick rule in the summer of 2007 which would have throttled the bear run on Bear Stearn in 2008, but he did not try to reregulate anything.
