Powell Criticizes Obama, Defends Sotomayor, Jabs Rush
Colin Powell, one of the nation's most prominent African-Americans, is going after people who attacked Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor because of her stand in favor of affirmative action. Powell, who's from the same Bronx neighborhood in New York as Sotomayor, said she should face "a spirited set of hearings" in the Senate. But he said the federal appeals court judge, who would be the first Hispanic justice, shouldn't be condemned for ruling against white firefighters who contended they suffered reverse discrimination.

Jobs go the the most qualified not doled out by the color of your skin. The sin is that the black firefighters failed the test. My question is they were already fire fighters. Why???

I used to think that I would vote for Collin Powell and that scares me. He flips across the whole spectrum doesn't he??? He is worse at flip-flops than his favored President. All her upbringing and life experience is not supposed to come into the issues. She is supposed to only consider american law and the US constitution. Using those one could not be for affirmative action. The justices who do not follow the constitution need to go.

Affirmative action is a joke anyway. Applications want to know your race, age, gender. If you don't get the job, how do you know what the reason was? The employer allows says "we found someone who meets our qualifications better than you"! I have known employers who decide after the interview because they see the person is black. That is unfair. Base the job on qualifications and references and hire someone before you know their age, race, or gender. Only way to be sure it is fair.

I, for one, do not want a supreme court justice in power because of affirmative action. I want a supreme court justice because he/she will follow the constitution to the letter of the law. So be it for all other jobs across the nation. If a black woman is more qualified for a position than I am, then she is the one who should get the job. Plain and simple.

I honestly can not figure out how anyone could view the firemen not getting their promotions because of their race. They did not get promoted because a black man wasn't qualified. It absolutely had to do with race. If there had been black men who qualified, they would have been promoted. I do not understand what makes them think the test wasn't fair. They all had the same time, means of studying, etc. Give me a break! People should be able to get a job based on their qualifications and nothing to do with race. If I knew I got a job because I was a woman and not because they felt I could do the job, I would not feel like I deserved it. What gives a person the incentive to do a good job if they know they will get and keep the job because of the color of their skin or their gender.
