I was wondering how the following has been justified. The federal tax on cigarettes is being increased from .39 cents to $1.01 per pack (260% increase). Sounds like a lot. But did you know that the tax on a small pack of loose tobacco was being in increased from about $.04/package to $1.01 (2500% increase). Now this is supposed to fund the SCHIP health insurance program for children, which I agree would be a good thing if the money REALLY goes there, and at the same prompt more people to quit smoking (oops, there goes the funding). But if that is such a priority why not increase the tax on other items like... fast food, alcohol, candy, and soda pop. Better yet, how about a 2500% tax increase on NASCAR tickets or shotgun shells. Hmm, maybe that's the part of the plan we haven't heard yet.

The only true tax reform is the abolishment of the IRS. That means the only words we should be debating is the fair-tax debate. It is the only equalizing tax system. Even the un-documented workers would be paying this tax from every purchase they make. It is true taxation with representation. You're only taxed when you make a purchase. For the first time the government would be forced to live in a budget. And K street would dry up and whither away. No more lobbiest extortions and/or bribes. And no more payroll tax. Good for us, bad for them. The end of taxes as we know it is coming. Unite America!

I believe everyone on this site and interested in the Tea Party is obviously disturbed about the wild spending policies of the new administration. Here is a solution for our economic ills once we have a Congress and President open to a reasonable common sense plan. It is called the Fair Tax---sponsored by Congressman John Linder from Georgia and co-sponsored by at least 44 others in Congress. To obtain more information, the Fair Tax organization has an excellent web site. If, however, you wish to have me expound of some of the basic ideas and advantages I will be glad to do so.

It is refreshing to see so many concerning citizens being pro-active in the political arean. See you in The Woodlands, Texas on April 15th for the rally.

I think all elected representatives, senators and elected officials should put their net worth in escrow on the day that they begin serving the people and if they lose our money, they should forfeit theirs. I f they get to put their hands in my pocket, I want to be able to reach into theirs. A public servant should not come out of office wealthy. PERIOD!!

Why don't we raise the pay of our congressmen. (don't yell yet) Then decrease their salary for every dollar they spend for their state,or special interests. say 1000, in salary for every 100,000.00 they spend.

It's chilling to hear Congressmen say they will "tax all the money back" from the executives...or anyone, for that matter. All these guys know is tax and spend, tax and spend...OUR MONEY.

We need to vote these guys out of office. They don't get it. Some, like Byrd have been there for 50 years. Totally, completely out of touch with everyday hard-working Americans. They lead pampered, pompous lives.

VOTE 'EM OUT.

And meanwhile, gas up your vehicle and head for a Tea Party ...

i have an idea that i have been trying to share with mr oriely but cant seem to figure this computer out. if we the people could stimulate our own economy and reward ourselfes with so much money we could get off of the economic issues. i know the government was for us at first but to put it nicely they seem to be on another planet and are so used to things being the way they are that a new approach dosent seem likely. i may be off in left feild and may be missing alot, but there is a way to raise the moral of the people, and that is to give them some control and more direct benefits from all this money that there keeps going out. the numbers are some thing like this .10x43000000000x7or15or21or30dividedby1000000is what i am not good at math either but its alot of money that would go diectly to people 12 months after year after year . tim gieitner if you dont understand holler at me

We need "Term Limits" on the ballot. We also need to add to the ballot a change to the Politician's Retirement Plans and do away with it. They make enough money from their lobbyists and other means. I had to work 26 years with the same company before I could receive retirement pay, why should they have to do the same?

I don't see why anyone is surprised -- this is what Democrats do. They spend other people's money under the guise that "we know what's good for you."

All you can do is remember this in 2010 when it's time to hold the Congress accountable for their actions. I firmly believe Obama's a one-termer, but he is basically powerless anyway -- it's his Congress that makes him powerful. Take his Congress away and the snake is defanged, probably before he can spend all the money he plans on taking.

You're absolutely right. We'd be shocked if we knew just how much of our hard earned money actually goes to pay taxes. That's why we favor the Fair Tax. I am convinced that if ALL Americans UNDERSTOOD how it works, Congress would be flooded with letters and calls to pass it. There is already legislation pending in Congress. And Obama claims the Republicans aren't offering alternatives to his plans!.See if your Representative and Senators are supporting it at FairTax.org. Also check out this chart: http://www.fairtax.org/site/PageServer?pagename=news_prestaxplans. It speaks for itself.

If we don't pay taxes then where does the money come from to pay for the necessary services in this country? Who pays the Military, the Cops, the Firemen, the Teachers? We need the tax loop holes closed so every citizen pays the same taxes. The issue isn't taxation it's having to shoulder more than your load because of loop holes and people not paying.

I haven't notice anyone raise the issue of the great middle class tax cut that came our way starting this last month. It turns out to be a "Refundable Tax Credit" to be paid back when you file your 2009 taxes in 2010. It is $400.00 for singles and $800.00 for married couples. This so called tax cut is good for 2009 and 2010 and then goes away in 2011, yet you have to pay back those tax cuts in the following years. All this can be found on the IRS website under the "Make Work Pay Act" link.

Giant Deficit Anyone?

I'm a little confused on why you guys are so upset about taxes. Right-wingers are the ones who supported an unchecked free market that left us in financial ruins where banks (the majority of whom are run by registered republicans) require funds from our government to remain solvent. And it's Right-wingers who have spent freely on two wars while lowering taxes (first time that's happened in history). The governments needs this money to clean up the mess that was created by spending money over the last eight years that we didn't have.
