Obama Wants Ban on School Snack Vending Machines

President Barack Obama is preparing to ask Congress to ban vending machines of sugary snacks and drinks. It could raise another fight over federalism.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said the administration will seek changes when Congress overhauls the Childhood Nutrition Act. It is a worthy goal to say the least. However, there is a serious constitutional question over the federal government’s increasing role in dictating specific policies in local school systems. Often Congress conditions federal funds on states complying with such guidelines. The use of such conditions has long raised federalism concerns, though the courts have largely upheld such conditions (as opposed to direct legislative bans).

@ moderation: It's a pretty big leap to equate snack food and drink to cigarettes and I'm not making that leap with you. As a parent, it's MY job to teach my children what the best choices in life are, not bho and not the government. They have no business in our personal lives, our public or private schools or businesses.

Probably no one here is in favor of putting cigarette machines where kids can get to them in schools. There is no moral or health reason to have cr&p made available to children in public schools.

So who put YOU in charge of my children's health decisions and moral training? Just like a liberal to want to manage the lives of MY children. They are MY CHILDREN, not yours. Remove your own kids from what you perceive to be dangers to them and leave my parenting to me, thank you very much.

It's so reassuring to know our president wanna-be is tackling the really tough issues like snack machines in schools and putting the pesky little irritations like "Iran With Nukes", defeating the Taliban once and for all, destroying the terrorists worldwide, support and understanding of the mission of the military, etc., etc., etc., on the back burner.

Once the vending machines are out of school what is Obama's next plan??? Have the food police stand in front of all fast food restaurants watching how many parents will take their kids to eat fast food every day?? Or even better have signs in stores saying "children below the age of 18 are not allowed to buy candy".

I taught for almost 30 years. Some schools had snack machines, some did not. However, our snack machines had fruit-juices-etc and were not turned on during lunch time. Many kids participate in after school activities and the snack machine was something they and their parents appreciated. Now, our local community developed this plan. Any other local community can do the same exact thing. The Federal government does not need to dictate such things.

The so-called "tubbies" don't need anymore federal interference with their lives than anyone else does. You can't defend individual choices for things like abortion or sexual orientation and then say the government has the right to tell you what you can and cannot eat. Libs are all about controlling others' unless it interferes with their agendas.

Are you saying that you have not been able to teach your children about healthy food choices on your own? If they are old enough to go to school and have money for vending machines, what is to prevent them from buying a donut at the bakery across the street? There's a whole big world out there just filled with evils such as junk food - get real, and teach your children some self-control. Hard to believe ANYONE thinks that with the issues we are facing today that the federal government should spend time on this. What's wrong with your local school board controlling your neighborhood school?

had enough already

they need to conquer the school systems, they know that taking on free thinking adults will be much harder to do but if they can start manipuplating their ways on the children at young enough ages then the rest will just fall into place, given time. The government needs to remove themselves from the schools. Parents need to step up and become involved, know what is going on at you school. If you are not aware of the issues how will you know how to fight what is being done. For to long to many parents have not worried about what is going on in the schools, as long as their kids were safe, getting a meal while away from home, getting passing grades and for some saving the family money on daycare by being at school, then everything was ok with the world. Unfortunately you as a parent can no longer count on schools now adays to have your childs best interest at heart and for that you need to step up to the plate. We must protect our children and our way of life. Become involved today.

Ya know, now I am really getting ticked off. I just had to respond to such an ignorant question earlier! I wonder if Ginty is assuming that my child is fat? Because I mentioned Type 1 diabetes. My child is not fat, never has been. She is a dancer. She gets low blood sugar through out the day and needs to treat lows with different kinds of snacks involving carbs. Anyway, to suggest that the government is concerned with healthy eating in schools is laughable in its face. The school food served in the morning as a free breakfast usually a donut or some other kind of pastry. The lunch is composed of food stuffs that no fast food restaurant would serve because it doesn't meet their standards. Give me a flippen break!
