Water!

There is water on the Moon, scientists stated unequivocally on Friday, and considerable amounts of it.

“Indeed yes, we found water,” Anthony Colaprete, the principal investigator for NASA’s Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite, said in a news conference.

The confirmation of scientists’ suspicions is welcome news both to future explorers who might set up home on the lunar surface and to scientists who hope that the water, in the form of ice accumulated over billions of years, could hold a record of the solar system’s history.

Don't panic!

This is great, this will save billions of dollars when it comes to human exploration of the moon, then on to Mars and beyond. Come on guys where is your sense of wonder and adventure, there are asteroids out there that contain billions off dollars worth of precious metals, helium 3 on the moon that could power nuclear fusion reactors, we could build orbiting solar power panels that could power the world, orbiting hotels, the list can go on. Space is far from a waste of money, how do you think your GPS works in your car!

I understand that discovering water is really cool to people who love outer space. But, in this economy, why spend so much money on a dream that will never come true. I know there should be exploration to monitor effects on earth, but going to Mars, etc. is just a huge waste of money right now. When times are better, okay, but now NASA needs to concentrate on what effects us now. What did we gain from going to the moon the last time other than a thrill of being there? How about spending more money on our oceans and natural resources that are being ruined by pollution and understanding our earth? Anyone going to the moon will be very rich people who are bored. Too much money for such a small portion that will benefit from this endeavor.

I understand your position. To me, this is not about tourism or satisfying obscure scientific curiosity. Part of the rationale is strategic - other countries are acting on plans to colonize this valuable real estate. Another factor is the presence on the moon of high levels of helium-3, thought to be key to establishing a viable commercial nuclear fusion capability. As I said elsewhere, I personally believe we should be hedging our bets for survival of our species in the long run given multiple global extinction threats in any single planetary location - but that one is admittedly hard to argue in the short term given the economic situation.

Water is a key discovery that will enable establishment of long-term human habitation on the moon. It is located in a place where there is also 24-hour sunshine (on a ridge near the moon's south pole), so it will also be possible to set up a reliable photovoltaic energy source. Water + electricity = hydrogen and oxygen. these can be used to sustain life and grow food. Hydrogen + oxygen is also useful for energy storage and rocket propulsion.

I see it differently. I don't consider humans to be tethered to Earth in the long run, and in fact colonizing outer space is essential to the long-term survival of our species (the central imperative of life itself). There is ample geologic evidence that planet-wide extinction events occur on Earth periodically and I am of the opinion we should be thinking about avoiding the game of Russian roulette.

The biggest problem is that there is no real reason to be there. Unless we start using nuclear powered or something else that drastically reduces the price getting there it is far too expensive for it to pay off.

Sunday, November 15, 2009 at 12:15 AM Report

test image

pseudoscience

It may well pay for itself. That is part of why the discovery of water is important. It will vastly reduce the cost of colonizing the moon because less weight will need to be boosted through the Earth's gravity well. the moon can serve as a staging location, and mass can be boosted through its vacuum and 1/6 gravity much less expensively. If helium-3 makes fusion energy practical, the payoff is huge and immediate.

If it doesn't pay for itself it won't happen. You can learn more by pouring $1 billion dollars into other research because most of the money is not wasted merely getting there. If you want to stay in space a long time we have to get the price of getting there WAY DOWN.

Incidentally, the discovery of water on the moon reduces the estimated cost of colonies there because most of the essentials of sustaining life can now be synthesized instead of being transported there.

Scientists are always talking about the masses of minerals and water that is ready and waiting to mined on the moon. What no one ever tends to mention is that the mass of the moon is what keeps it in orbit around us and as we all know the moons gravitational pull is what makes tides happen in our oceans.
I am worried what will happen if we start to remove mass from the moon and, even worse than drink it on space exploration missions, bring minerals back to Earth. Hmmm decreasing the mass of the moon, increasing the mass the earth. I am worried the moon might just fall out the sky one day if we mine too much of it.

Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 01:32 AM Report

Even if we mine it like crazy and send the mass down to Earth it is far too large for us to effect the mass much. The bigger problem is that it is far too expensive to get there for it to pay its way. Minerals are far too cheap for that to happen.
