Swine Flu! Should We Close Mexican Border?

The "swine flu" that has infected more than 1,000 people in Mexico has led a lawmaker on the House Homeland Security Committee to call on U.S. officials to close the southern border. Rep. Eric Massa (D-N.Y.) said the border should be closed until the threat is resolved.

Okay, so this morning a report comes out on www.AmericanParchment.com that the President of Mexico is telling everyone to stay home. When I looked at the site I didn't see a link but said it was a developing story. Interesting though. If the President of Mexico tells everyone to stay home, that would mean less people should be going across the boarder by walking, flying, or driving, right. So in his own efforts, he has tried to close the border. Something our administration wasn't even willing to do. How can they say it would be ineffective. If you had a cold wouldn't you try every way to keep from getting sick, like taking Zicam, Cold-Ease, drinking a lot of water, etc. Wouldn't closing the border and/or allowing only American Citizens to cross the border after a thorough check help cut down on the possibility of keeping the cold or spreading it to others???
In addition, doesn't a WHO Level 5 Pandemic Protocol call for borders to be closed to stop the spread it the disease?

When are we going to see Geraldo covering the swine flu epidemic while on location in Mexico? I want to see him interview patient zero and squash these internet rumors that a US-owned industrial pig production facility is the source of the swine flu in Mexico. I want to see what kind health care the average Mexican is receiving. I want to see how the Mexican media is handling the swine flu outbreak.

I'm SURPRISED Obama hasn't hung "Little Welcome Bags" along the Border fence every 500 yards. Each illegal could receive one of these as they SNEAK into the Country. In each bag would include:
1. Disinfectant Wipes
2. A Protective Face Mask
3. a list of All the FREE MEDICAL Walk-in facilities
4. the address of the nearest ACORN satellite office so they can REGISTER to vote.
5. ?????

Sick people and/or family who may have the flu shouldn't be told they should or have to stay at home till they show signs of the illness or are cleared of the flu if they don't do the same at the border.

It makes no sense to suggest people who are sick should stay at home so they won't infect others and to "contain" the virus but then they don't do the same for the borders. Why not just close the borders except for emergency, health officials and medical reasons only?? When animals escape...you don't let the others in the barn go free too..you contain them, while you search for the others...otherwise...you're just running in circles and the animals go everywhere in different directions. How is that helpful? Just because a person doesn't show signs..doesn't mean they don't have it...yet.The poor child who died was at a mall prior to showing symptoms.

Epicenter? I do not know, but suspicious of Mexico. We have here in America an estimated 25 million Illegal Immigrants mainly from Mexico. Our politicians have done almost nothing over the years in containing our borders....even the token wall is still not completed. I guess we will have to make them l legal so the new National Health Program will also have to be passed...As R.Emanual states Can't let a crises go pass by...Fantastic plan President/Democrats.

I think its not mexico we should be suspicious of but our own government. The borders have needed to be controlled for along time and closed down when they were over-running our ability to track them. Now we are at a health risk and our border check agents arent allowed to wear masks to protect themselves because they look too intimidating. When is it enough?

Come on now. Once the disease had infected the first traveler, whether legal or not, it was still a minor outbreak and nobody had any reason to think it was a new strain of the flu. Closing the border now would have zero effect on its further spread.

This is a great reminder that it's important for everyone to wash their hands, carry purell hand sanitizers and use it everytime you touch a door knob or say push a door at a grocery store, cart, fast food, anywhere....you have no idea who was the last person to touch it and honestly...if that person who cough or sneeze 5 people ahead of you had washed their hands before opening/closing, etc. This is spread by coughing, sneezing and by hands, so it's easy to pick up when you don't expect it...people who have this often don't show signs immediately so just be extra careful and practice hand washing..that is just common sense and a way to protect yourself and family.

It makes no sense that other countries are restricting travel to the U.S. affected areas and Mexico but we aren't doing the same with our borders both north and south; This is a matter of National Security and we can't wait till we are 1. have our health facilities swamped, 2. Deaths begin to rise IF that happens; Has the officials allow thought that we encourage people to stay at home to self-quarantine but yet allowing people who may not show signs of infection YET to still cross the borders..unless we get thermal scanners like in Asia...visual scanning is not reliable. Why increase a problem?

And it starts. The first death in the US was a 22 or 23 month old Mexican national. My heart goes out to the child's parents. Illegal or not ,they came to Huston from Mexico. We will be seeing more and more of this. I bet that all the states along the border will see a dramatic increase in hospital cases concerning illegals that will tax our resources in this country and we, as the taxpayers, will be footing the bill again. The border should be closed, but due to our lax immigration policies and lack of enforcement, the majority of the problems will stem from illegal crossings, not people trying to cross the border legally. Again, too little, too late.

This is no way anti-Mexico or anti-illegal immigrants..even communist countries are quarantining and restricting travel from Mexico; Japan won't accept or issue visas from Mexico...they don't care about illegal immigration; They care about the public health of their countries. Even Mexico has shut down offices, public events and churches...U.S. just acts like this is non-existant. The trouble is that we can't keep thinking we are a cure all; There is a huge cost. It was sad what happen but the truth is...other countries are doing it. They are even using thermal scanners and not allowing people flying in from Mexico to come into their country but get quarantine and you don't see a stink about this...enough with the blame game...time to wake up and see that we have a potential problem that doesn't care about politics.

They are making this about politics like everything else and it's really just shows how disinterested the administration is about the welfare of the peasants..er..common people.
This is a virus that is serious particularly to those affected and such a reminder to be proactive, even just making sure we wash our hands and cover our coughs and sneezes and then washing our hands when we do that. Just finding ways to stop the spread and not be a host for the spread.Anyone whose been sick knows how miserable that is and when this is something that can potentially be amplify and easily spread due to politics or just lack of common sense, it just worsens the situation not make it less.
If anything...they need to do more than just visually check; Invest in thermal scanners; Asia can do it why not us? Even communist countries have invested in thermal scanners...where is the common sense anymore?
Wash your hands, cover your coughs and sneezes and stay home if you have even have a slight fever

Think on this--a combination of swine, bird and human DNA flu..Sounds like a cocktail to me mixed up by an expert in viral warfare. Why not just introduce such a mixture into a 2nd world country bordering the US, within a populace that runs across our borders? That is an easy way to perpetrate this into our country without our government realizing we have been attacked again. Seems like what has happened, and right when our government officials were also in Mexico. I think Mexico has been used to get at us!

Cuba has closed their borders and their a communist country!! If it's good enough for them to do that to protect their own...why not the U.S. and why not Mexico??
With containment it prevents the spread of even more of the virus, allows officials better chance to survey the different variants and allow better distribution of resources and helps the virus to be contain and to just sizzle out instead finding new hosts to continue and the concern too is that the more its allow to be spread..the greater the chance of it mutating...and that makes getting a vaccine harder..
It's not about politics..its about good sense..whats the point of asking people to quarantine in the their own homes when it can be done on a larger scale to facilitate better use of resources and allow the health officials to better zero in on an effective cure.

Sadly, communist countries show more commonsense than our own country is.
We don't even have thermal scanners and how hard is it to just stay home if there is a slight fever, wash the hands and cover up coughs and sneezes...no point being the source of the spread versus being the endpoint.
If Cuba can close their borders and other countries that aren't even democratic can do it...we should be able to do it and stop playing politics.
