Ben Nelson Threatens Filibuster
Democratic Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) said Thursday that he would prevent health reform from moving to final passage if restrictions on federal funding for abortion weren’t tightened during the amendment process. But, he added, “there are a lot of other things that could keep me from supporting it in the end as well.”
Spokesman Jake Thompson elaborated a bit, "The abortion language, the public option and some other issues could be reason for him to vote no on cloture for final passage of a health care reform bill."

These people never cease to amaze me. Any politician knows that moving a billl forward to the debate stage runs the risk of having the bill pass. If Nelson and others have such reservations, why did they vote yes on Saturday? Why not stop the bill in its tracks now, start again, and do it right to include medical malpractice reform and the purchase of health insurance on a nationa-wide basis just to name two important factors. Is this the John Kerry Syndrome of "I was against it but I voted for it"?

CookieLou, you are right. What they will do now is vote against the bill when it comes to the full Senate and Reid will use the nuclear option so that only 51 votes will be needed. This way Nelson, Lincoln, and Landreiu will be able to say that they voted against it to their constituents, but it will not work for them. The people of Louisiana, Arkansas, and Nebraska need to flood these senators e-mails will their opinion as whether they support this bill or not. We must keep score on these politicans and make them pay at election time, no matter how far off it may be.

Virginians hate the health insurance bill and took down both Dem senator's phones with all the calls on Friday. It didn't change their vote at all. They both voted for cloture, the dirty dog traitors.

When in the he!! is Nelson coming up for re election?! As a Nebraskan, I can say with accuracy that hardly anyone wants the healthcare bill in this state. Nebraska's main industry is INSURANCE!!! This bill will destroy Nebraska's economy. This state has been more engaged in what has been going on than any other time. Nelson will not be able to wiggle out of this one. He is a failure that has failed not only Nebraska, but this entire country. Hey Ben: when you're voted out, you might want to consider moving to San Fransisco.

Nelson voted for cloture where you need 60 votes and thus Dems needed every Democrat to vote Yes yesterday.
Now the Democrats don't need his vote. He will vote No from here on out to try to save his butt....but it won't. He's toast. He committed political suicide yesterday.

I tried to call Ben Nelson's office last week and got a full voice mail response and today the line just rang busy I was not able to get thru. I voted Republican and voted for Nelson the last time he ran but I will NEVER make that mistake again. What a lying sell out he is as I know he knows the majority of Nebraskans DO NOT want the government take over of our health system yet he ignores our wishes so he can stay in the good graces of all the lazy free loaders and all the idiots in D.C. who are ruining this country. This is more bull sh than can be handled , This guy says he has been assured he will get the chance to put forth amendments if he votes yes on cloture. Mary Landrieu just spoke and said her yes vote on cloture does not mean she will vote for the bill in the end, I am sure Blanche lincoln will also come around to voting to start debate. The problem is , with these 3 desperately needed votes by Reid because 60 votes are required, when they all go back to their district and say they voted against the bill, it will be because after the debate only 51 votes will be required to pass it...so they can say they voted for it before they voted agaist it.. I don't know if all of their constituents will be fooled, but what they are getting away with here is nobodys fault except their constituents, for not nipping this in the bud.
