WH Backs Off Mammogram Study
A top federal health official said Wednesday that the controversial new guidelines for breast cancer screening do not represent government policy, as the Obama administration sought to keep the debate over mammograms from undermining the prospects for health-care reform.
Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, in a written statement, said the new guidelines had "caused a great deal of confusion and worry among women and their families across this country," and she stressed that they were issued by "an outside independent panel of doctors and scientists who . . . do not set federal policy and . . . don't determine what services are covered by the federal government."
Sebelius's statement challenged the recommendations of that influential panel, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, made up of independent experts assembled by her department to address one of the most explosive issues in women's health.

I had a female employee for 13 years. She was 32 when she started working in our agency, had she had a mammogram before she was forty she may still be alive today. RIP Cheryl.

After I had my baby at age 27, like many women I developed a very inflamed and painful cyst. Had these guidelines existed back then I would have been forced to sit and worry in an unaware state panic -- and remain in the dark about my health instead of being able to seek examination. That whole ordeal was scary enough, but at least my mind was eased by the findings that it was not cancer. No longer will this be an option, like many more health related options to come (or go).

Forgot to mention that the cyst had in fact caused an infection in surrounding tissue, that under these guidelines may have prevented me and other women in the same situation from receiving much needed antibiotics ... in the future to be put on a waiting list to be seen by a doctor.

It IS what WILL happen. That panel WILL be deciding or one very similiar. It will have to happen in order for us to supposedly cover 30M more folks with it being deficit neutral. They've hidden the 250B Doctor credit and the CBO has actually gone along with the slight of hand trick to score it as 850B without taking into account the 250B Doctor credit. Essentially working folks will be paying for 2 different health plans their own and for the d e a d b e a t s/i l le g a l s that don't work and/or won't pay for their own care!
