Unions have been instrumental in the past of fighting for safe working conditions, better pay and better benefits for workers. Where it went wrong was when it decided to get into political arena and support candidates, particulary the left of center variety. If the unions just stayed out of politics and concentrated on helping working people and persuading people to join their ranks, the Unions in the United States would be in better shape. They would not be receiving the scorn or negativity that they are experiencing from the American people today.

I am sure unions will be happy to support a Republican when they find a Republican that is not anti-union. Republicans get most of their support from businesses and they hate unions because they take away from their profit margins. All Republicans have to do is try to find some middle ground, but they cater 100% to businesses.

Once businesses realized their own businesses would be unionized they began to offer the benefits & pay Unions had fought for. Certainly unions AND employers have abused their power. But just like Government, all the power should never be invested in one party or branch.

Groups like the AFL-CIO, AARP, and AMA need to just shutup. They speak for no one but the ones in charge and as far as I know there are maybe a dozen in each group and they only get one vote apiece. While some of their membership may think the way they do more than likely the vast majority of them are just like the rest of us - center/right not crazy a-s liberals or wild eyed righties. Both parties should remember that.

I'm calling to urge you to vote no on the Health Care reform bill, HR 3962 that is up for vote this week. This bill will make an already bloated health care system even more complicated by adding over 2000 pages of new regulations to our law books, and its trillion dollar price tag will drive up health care costs. I want a free market solution to fixing our health care system, not more bureaucracy and irresponsible spending. I urge the Congressman to vote no on this bill!." When you are done, ask them to repeat back what you just said so you know they wrote it down.

Guess the US Dept of Labors statistics are racist, as well... the Oct. figures show unemployment for black men @15.7% vs. white men @ 9.5% ... the ad may have needed another black worker being laid off to be factually representative of the current situation. So how well is the AFL - CIO faring in their efforts to negotiate maintaining US jobs when the Cap and Trade encourages companies to shift production overseas?

How have unions been the cause of many mothers having to work to pay for things whenever union membership has done nothing but decline for the last several decades? There were fewer women who had to work during our peek in union membership because the middle class was stronger and 1 person could make a decent living. __________________________________________________________
There was a need for unions a hundred years ago. Unions have outlived their usefulness and need to be outlawed. They are just as corrput as the politicians they support. Look a the steel industry, the car industry, teachers (America is at the bottom of the list in terms of test scores) Unions are the scourge of society. Only 30% of the workforce is unionized , yet they force the price up of the goods or services they offer. On a GM car, the legacy(union) costs are $4,500.00. The unions blew out of Allentown and left the union worker with NOTHING. Now tell me why we need them again??????????

@ Prussian Patriot, Why do we need unions again? I already explained it in a post that is probably on the second page. I use Wal-Mart as an example because I am tired of paying taxes to help their employees survive whenever they are one of the most powerful companies in the world. Would you rather pay a few extra dollars (actually it would be cents) on items such as T.V.’s, toys, computers, or whatever else at Wal-Mart or have money taken out of your check for social programs because Wal-Mart wants to maximize profits at all costs thus not paying their employees enough to survive? Again for me labor unions are a better alternative than Social Programs.
