South Carolina Republicans Unite With Tea Party

The South Carolina Republican Party announced Monday that it’s uniting with tea party groups in the state to share resources, coordinate messaging and push the GOP in a more conservative direction.

The points of contact between the state party establishment and the grass-roots will be the Greenville County Republican Party — one of the most conservative wings of the state party — and the Upstate Coalition of Conservative Organizations, an umbrella structure of state tea party groups.

The agreement, as announced by South Carolina Republicans, is designed to serve four goals: increase precinct involvement, improve communication between the state party and grass-roots groups, create liaisons between the state party and the various tea party organizations and to work “closely to make the Republican Party more conservative.”

State Republican Party Chairwoman Karen Floyd told POLITICO that the arrangement came at the suggestion of a local activist who works with both the state party and local tea party groups.

This has the potential of being a great advantage so long as the Tea Party holds the GOP accountable to follow through with their end of the bargain, to find and elect a more constitutional conservative person, not a conservative talking moderate leaning liberal voting person like Mitt Romney.

The Republican Party brought the nation to this point of today. By preaching one thing and presenting deeds of 'same old politics'. The Tea Party is grass roots. The issue of Constitutional democracy vs the National Nanny has a core at the grass roots Tea Party, not a National Party machine. This SC RP may be an overload to the Independent Tea movement. Is there a ‘danger’ of a powerful 'old politics as usual’?

I have attended many tea party events here is Charleston SC. and consider myself a member. For the most part ,I feel as though the folks I have met are Independents. I am not sure about joining the Republicans on every issue. I certainly would not vote for Lindsey Graham. I think Americans are paying attention to what is going on and will vote for the right candidate. The last Presidential election there was no right Candidate to vote for. Interesting??

It's time for the Republican Party to forget this "moderate" stuff. It doesn't work, look at how Bush ran deficits. I think he vetoed one spending bill, maybe none. For me, my Tea Party support began as soon as the Democrats, with some RINO help, passed the supplemental appropriations bill a year ago, that was filled with pork.

The State GOPs know they cannot win without Tea Party support, New York District 23 proved that. SC GOP joining with Tea Party principles is the first of many. I expect at least 24 more state GOPs will do the same before the 2010 primaries have completed. BTW, 912ers are an integral and inseparable part of the Tea Party.

This is not a smart move. The Tea Party Movement -- and it is a movement and not a party -- is too young, too susceptible. I agree with the person who said any party is looking for a parade to jump in front. Newt Gingrich was the very first to do this at the huge NYC rally last April 15, and it annoyed the heck out of me.
The GOP will latch onto the Movement and why wouldn't they? This is where the power is coalescing and building. But it's very important that we stay "outside" the Beltway -- at least for now. It would not take long for the Tea Partiers to come under the umbrella of the Republicans. Once that happens, we lose power and perspective. And the GOP will resume their old tricks. They need to be watched for a long, long time. And we are the ones to do it.
REMAIN INDEPEDENT. REMAIN OUTSIDE. CONTINUE TO MONITOR AND INFLUENCE.

i agree with you duke. i believe your concerns are spot on. i am a republican but a disenchanted one. i think there are repubs just as cynical as the left and need to change some of their thinking. to start joining forces now would be disastrous to our movement. i think our purpose now is to continue with letting the government (right and left) know that we are not happy with the way they are leading us. if a republican comes along worthy of our support then we should offer it.......because we want to not because we have to or should.

If the Tea Party can in any way strengthen the GOP, then I'm all for it. Otherwise, a third party - at least at this time (the Tea Party is awfully young) could be more of an advantage to the Dems. Maybe a "merger" between the GOP and the Tea Party could be a possibility, if just to solidify votes against Dems. Just a thought from this SC gal.

Be wary tea partiers. No matter what political party we talk about today, they are all searching for a parade to jump in front of. Right now, that's the Tea Party. Historically I am a Republican. However, I would not trust the Republican establishment for any reason. My desire is for the TEA Party to change the establishment, not the other way around.
