PC School District Kills Valedictorian Honors
HUNTINGTON BEACH — A Huntington Beach high school district is the latest in the county to drop its top two graduation honors for classifications that include more students.
Huntington Beach Union High School District trustee voted 4-1 Tuesday night to eliminate the valedictorian and salutatorian positions, saying they place too much pressure on students. Those spots will be replaced for the class of 2013 with Magna Cum Laude and Summa Cum Laude classifications that will include more students.

I think that making us all the same is a tragedy. Students must learn that to have anything in this world you must earn it. I teach in Texas and sometimes wonder where they fairness is when it comes to my good students. Because the bad ones act out, we take privilidges from all of them. That is not fair. I know life is not fair, but when you earn the grades to be at the top of your class, you should be recognized. And colleges look at this too. We are not equal in school, some are really bright and some are not. Been this way since school began.

Has anyone thought about this? Why not let the two LOWEST grade averages give the commencement speeches? That would be fair, and at the rate our students are being "dumbed-down" by the "progressives", the speeches might be more inspirational to more people... or at least better understood.

Hell, why don't we just do away with grades entirely? That way poor little Joey or Susie won't have to worry about whether or not they're going to pass or fail? What a crock of political bile! Since when did it become a bad thing to foster competition in our schools? I for one WANT my children to be the smartest in their classes! That's the problem with America today, we've decided that it's okay to "dumb down" the classes so "no one is left behind". Well guess what, the REAL WORLD will not tolerate fools! Class dismissed...

Well we don't want anyone's feelings to get hurt now do we? We also give trophies to all players on a team now, we let overweight girls be cheerlearders and no one gets cut from a team. Why have your children strive for anything?

OMG-My son was the valedictorian of his HS class in 1999-It was an honor and somethign he worked hard for and I was very, very, very proud of him. What our stupid school did however, was not allow the valedictorian to give the customary speech. Instead they opted for the class president instead. When the class president was too shy they then asked my son to give the speech only to turn around 3 days before graduation telling him that they pressured the president to give the speech and he wouldn't be needed. This ticked me off to no end. I see no reason why they can't honor these kids-this is what we all should strive for. Instead they allow the popularity contest winner to speak.

They are the same one's ( parents included) who want to give a trophy to every little league team ( and other teams) just so their little brats want "feel" humuliated. It only deminishes the achievement of the team who really won.

This is just like the kids sports teams where everyone gets a trophy. Let's face it folks, there is always a winner and a loser , a top and a bottom. I must say that this looser anything goes kind of education turns out snotty, stupid kids who think the world owes them something. It doesn't. Kids should be taught that there are consequences to not performing at the highest possible level and that life has disappointments. The sooner they learn and understand that, the better off all of us will be. This is a huge mistake.

One way to discourage children from working harder. Take away the prize.
End up with a school of children who don't know how to read, write, spell of count. Just what the country needs. MORE FOOLS.
