More Arabic Being taught at Chicago Public Schools
The Chicago public schools will expand its Arabic-language program to three more high schools, thanks to a three-year, $888,000 federal grant announced this morning.
Mayor Daley accepted the grant at Durkin Park Elementary School, 8445 S. Kolin, as he rejected suggestions that the Fort Hood, Texas, massacre could lead to an outbreak of anti-Muslim sentiment.
“I don’t think so,” Daley said. “Every day, in society, someone’s being killed . . . . You don’t blame a group, you don’t blame a society or an immigrant community because of the actions of one group or one individual. You cannot say that.”

Arabic is being taught in the best schools to the smartest students--like any other language, you know? French, Spanish, Japanese, blah, blah, blah. There are 15 variants of Arabic. Combined, that makes Arabic the 6th most popular language worldwide. If your children travel the world, they are far more likely to encounter someone who speaks Arabic than someone who speaks French or German, which are popular language courses with that are taught without this type of up-in-arms objections. Of course, your children are far more likely than any of that to encounter someone who speaks Spanish everyday, and that seems to be a huge bone of contention as well.

The United States Armed Forces, the CIA and the State Department all complain that they can't find enough American citizens who are fluent in Arabic. Programs in our high schools are responding to this shortage and preparing students for good paying jobs.

Our children, according to the latest reports, are below average educationally in this world, and will not grow up and be able to compete in a world market. And our government gives a lot money to study a foreign language when half of our kids don't even understand the english language? Until 80% of our children can pass equivalency tests in English, we should not be wasting our tax dollars on PB BS.

Other languages are taught-but-we are at war -we don`t need this in our schools or using this to sway our children. We need reading,math and writing. Get back to the basics. We are Americans, a blended society but this country was built on Chirstian religion and patriotism. That should come first!
