San Francisco has become the first major city in the nation to outlaw the declawing of cats.
Some pet owners declaw their felines to protect themselves, or their furniture, from scratches. But pet advocates condemn the practice as animal cruelty.
On Tuesday, the Board of Supervisors voted 9-2 to enact a ban on the declawing of cats. Supervisors Sean Elsbernd and Michela Alioto-Pier voted against the legislation.

Advocacy groups just don't have anything else to do. Maybe they'll advocate to make it illegal to own cats.

Only a complete IDIOT would have a domesticated cat de-clawed! Might as well get the dog's teeth pulled, too.

its still ok to waterboard Pelosi, right?

We can always hope.

Look ...I'm as conservative as anyone I know personally but it is cruel to a cat to de-claw them if they are going to allowed outside as that how they protect themselves.
However, if they are indoor only then it does protect your property because they will tear it up.
I won't have a cat. I have had them but no more and never again.

I had my both cats spayed and neutered. Both my cats are declawed and just for you bleeding heart Peta people, they still hunt and look real cool with the mice, rats, squirrels and small rabbits they catch in their mouth.

I am confused also. Castration is not cruel but declawing is??

Somebody must have threatened to declaw Nancy....city council had to act fast to stop it...No other rational reasoning that I can see.

I think it's only the pro choice cats. The pro life ones still have no rights. God help us.

I'm a conservative that hunts. I don't think we need a law against declawing, or even be talking about it with the more important issues in the country now. But I've always been against declawing cats. It's how they protect themselves. Get them a scratching post if you have an indoor cat.
Hedson
I agree completely. Declawing is horribly painful (how would you like to have your fingernails ripped out of their sockets?) this is the only good thing I have ever seen come out of San Francisco.

Having to look at Nazi Pelosi on TV all the time makes me think they need to outlaw botox!

Lemmie see: can't smoke outside, can't inform ICE about perps who are illegal aliens, can parade naked in the streets, can watch live sex shows, can't declaw your cat, can't sue if an illegal alien freed by the city murders your husband and 2 sons. I don't think I'd ever want to live in San Fransicso.

Am amazed!! My beloved indoor cats are safe and healthy, no feline leukemia, fleas or ticks to bother them. They are declawed, and yes, they are both fixed (male and female). My skin, belongings and their wonderful kneeding feet live harmoniously!
San Fran, I'm sure your residents are very capable of making choices that are good for their own lives. Amazing!!!! Are you going to outlaw people mutilation now?? Oh, that would be plastic surgery....

But is aborting a cat still legal? Just asking.

With all the ills that San Fran has going on, I would think they would have had more important items on the agenda...however, they are free to do as they want...so here is my reply, I think visiting San Fran and spending a penny there should be a crime for any clear thinking person. There really are better places to go and spend your time and money.

We have 4 cats. 2 in door cats, a Tonkinese and a Siamese. Both of these animals were de-clawed when we got them. One reason was the furniture damage, but the second was to protect the parrots. 2 Half moon Conures we take around the house and sit on perches we have in every room. It was a bonus when my step daughter brought her Pomeranian to live with us. There were a few scuffels until everyone got to know everyone else and she ( the dog ) would have gotten the worse of it. She is 9 pounds. The cats are 10 and 13 pounds.
We have not seen any problems with the paws of either cat. Both were done by lazer procedures and both are quite fine years later.
San Fran. Clean up your cities real problems then worry pet owners and THEIR pets.

All this time i thought SF tried to make everything legal - ----what a waste of time this article is. What happens in SF should stay in SF - the real world does not care.

Just shaking my head i disbelief. They ahve not more important things to work on in San Franscisco????

Chill out people, declawing is painful and it is not necessary. Cats claws are growing just like our nails. At certain length it becomes uncomfortable and then turns in to pain (ingrown toenail anybody?) That is a reason cat will scratch furniture, basically to file some growth off…..many animals will do that in their natural habitat. Domesticated cat does not need claws for hunt or protection, and to avoid damage to furniture it is recommended to clip their claw tips slightly every few months. Groomer will do it for you or do it yourself. Special clippers are very inexpensive and available. Never use human nail clippers or pliers.
Atlantis
I agree. If you love your pets you wouldn't declaw them, it can cause incredible pain and for many years.
Most modern countries outlaw declawing as it's so barbaric. I can't understand why anyone would declaw a pet in most situations knowing the potential lifelong pain it can cause them. Just seems pretty selfish to me.
Pets require responsibility like anything else and that means spending time to clip their claws or glue on covers or have someone clip them for you. I would never declaw a pet of mine especially after all the do for me.
gingerk
Last cat we had we declawed his two front paws. I was going to get a new grandbaby and the cat was young and loved to jump and claw anything that moved. I will never do it again, tho. We had him 12 years and after about 7or 8 years, he developed a definite disability in his hindquarters. He did live a long time and had a good life, but I regret to this day declawing him. However, I don't think it should be illegal because if it was, we'd have had to give him up. It should stay a choice with the pet owner.

San Francisco was once a working class town. All this changed during the late 50s, 60s and 70s when the Beatnik and Hippy generation started moving in. Now San Francisco is a bastion of political correctness, unbridled leftism and secularism run amock. It is these enties and ideologies that are destroying what was once a wonderful City By The Bay. I pray that the San Francisco will reverse course, however I remain at this time pessimistic.
Lemure
Guess Pelosi was afraid they were coming after her so she had to have them change the law.
chip
Does anyone here know how they declaw a cat. I dont think so they dont just pull the claw out they cut off the cats paw tip to the first knuckel. It is crule, if you want to own a cat you should put up with the problems that come with it.
Jim in JAX
This legislation was obviously supported by mice and rats. Oh wait. That's Nancy Pelosi's district. No wonder. She'll feel much safer now.

Cats have nothing to do with babies, why make the comparison?? If anything, neocons love to preach how "pro-life" they are, yet once a child is born, they care less if they starve. Since neo-cons, teabaggers, et al, don't like to pay taxes that helps feed children via welfare, what does that call them? HYPOCRITES!!
soonan TX
As usual you either miss the point or refuse its validity. You are very blind if you can not see the irony and wrongness between the two. You are so stupid. I have a child and that child did not starve or get abused. My familiy and friends have children that were not starved or abused. I have nothing agains feeding children. What I have a problem with is parents too lazy to work and feed their children. You really have your facts scrambled.
