WPTV: Last month, when Trevor Keezer started bringing his Bible to work, Keezer says his manager confronted him about the ["One nation under God, indivisible."] button. "That's when I was told it had to come off, or I would be sent home. So they sent me home for six straight days without pay. And then today they terminated me." Read more ...

I am all for One Nation Under God. But in this case if your employer's policy is no buttons while at work then that should be followed. When I worked for a large corporation I was not allowed to wear any shirt with logos or writing of any kind. Even the shirt manufacturers' logos were not acceptable.
Roger In Miami
I agree DJOHIO.
We've all been to Home Depots. Ever see any buttons displayed by the employees for anything other than company stuff? I haven't and I'm in the place all the time.
Hell,, they even hand write their names on their aprons.
I hate to say it but I think this guy was just being stubborn. And that's a shame.
TrueTexan
I look at it this way, a button is a button, if you don't like what it says don't look at it. But any company that works with the Great Messiah and his croonies on socializing the USA needs to be boycotted and ignored.

And a company dress code is a company dress code. If you don't like it then don't work there. He knew that and now he doesn't work there.

O.K. no more Home Depot for me. Lowes, here we come.

That is what this country was founded on and it is a great day when the youth of this country are not afraid to stand up for God and country. That is a true American!

I will never again step into a Home Depot. In my opinion, anyone who is really familiar with this history of this country and cares about preserving the greatness of this country needs to get back to the basics and support, above all else, God and Country! Our American flag and the cross are the greatest symbols of this country and the values on which it was founded and built. I call the ACLU the Anti-Christian Liberties Union because of the constant efforts it makes to get God out of our country. I am sick and tired of the daily persistent attacks on God and our country!
kerpo
I agree! It is time to boycott Home Depot and any others that don't want to honor GOD in this country and stand up for what this country was founded "In God, we trust", without God we will not stand! Let our voices be heard, loud and clear.
Jenna
I doubt that Home Depot has anything against "One Nation Under God," but it's that PC mentality that reacts without thinking whenever the word "God" appears in public. The Constitutional mandate for separation of church and state does not apply to businesses, but Christianity has become such a hot button issue that people tend to forget that Christians have the right to identify themselves as Christians in public. Home Depot made the mistake of allowing the employee to wear the pin as long as it appeared to be motivated by his love of country, but when he brought his Bible to work, Christianity reared its ugly head and suddenly 'One Nation Under God" took on a different meaning.

Fox News Blogger -- it's obvious you have never read all the prophesies in the Bible -- its all about politics and countries. Very interesting. Do some research.

I had already decided not to go to Home Depot anymore after learning that they were one of the big corporations meeting with Obama (outside of the National Chamber of Commerce) about health care, and after this -- I may never go back.
I spend hundreds a year -- but I'll go to Lowe's.
kerpo
Can you give some information on where you learned that Home Depot corporation has met with Obama on health care? That is interesting stuff and should be exposed. Thanks.
Vavoom
This may make me unpopular but if it was clearly stated that any type of badge or button cannot be worn at work as part of the dress code, then what kind of leg does he have to stand on? What the button says is not relevant. I'm a Christian and my workplace has a very strict uniform policy. Any kind of button or badge not provided by them would be out of the question.
Let's not turn this into a "What's next, will you be fired for wearing a cross around your neck?" issue. It's comparing apples and oranges. Having to adhere to your employer's policy on dress code is not the same as being punished for your beliefs. There are plenty of other ways to share your faith.

@Vavoom
You are correct. According to the Home Depot spokesperson, “The company’s dress code policy states that we do not allow noncompany buttons, regardless of their message or content.”

How about NOT SHOPPING at Home Depot. Let them know this is not an acceptable practice! I say BOYCOTT!

I am sick and tired of the "FLAG BASHING" and "GOD BASHING" in America.
I love the United States of America, the Flag, and GOD and I admire anyone who has the guts to stand up and say so. I am tired of the POLITICALLY CORRECTNESS that says we are not supposed to display our love of God and Country. The PLEDGE OF ALLEGIENCE and THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER bring tears to my eyes, and if you do not want to hear either - you are the one with the problem, but you are welcome to go somewhere else. I believe the distancing of God from our lives is part of the reason our Country is facing such adversity and trying times. I also believe the violence and crime by our young people is because we baby them and do not teach them to love GOD and COUNTRY and the truthful history of our Nation. GOD was a huge influence in the founding our America. If anyone does not like America and believe they can find happiness somewhere else - there is a plane or ship leaving daily.

Violence and crime is down. Also, God really doesn't care about borders; God has no influence on anything to do with politics or countries.

@Mark
You said, "God influences everything." So that would mean that if violence is up, then that's because it's God's choice (fault?).
Mark
Violence is not down, it is at unprecedented rates. Crime is off the charts. God influences everything. What planet do you live on? Do you really believe you can spout this stuff and people will believe you? This isn't the HP. Even the name is dishonest. Fox News Blogger. REALLY?
klofcolorado
I for one am getting sick and tired of the FLAG BASHING and the GOD BASHING in America. I believe in the United States and I love my Country and my GOD. If you are a non-believer in either - that is your problem! I am extremely tired of the POLITICALLY CORRECT stance that we are to hide both!
You are free to believe in what you want, but don't try to stifle my beliefs. If you do not wish to say the PLEDGE OF ALLEGIENCE - again that is your problem - stay away from places that they say it. Our children would be a lot better off if we taught love of GOD and COUNTRY in the schools and the correct history of this nation. Anyone who doesn't like America is free to leave - there are planes and boats leaving daily!

According to the Home Depot spokesperson, “The company’s dress code policy states that we do not allow noncompany buttons, regardless of their message or content.” Anyone who does't like it is free to leave. Oh, wait. He did. Problem solved.

I believe that HD has made a serious public relations gaffe over a button. I don't believe that the justification presented by the unnamed HD rep is the true reason behind the termination. It's just the convenient explanation provided by their lawyers to deflect accusations.
Gee, it's too bad I already boycott HD due to their non existent customer service, the woeful lack of floor workers, never, ever having enough cashiers and their perpetual inability to keep their best selling commonly used items in stock.
If HD would pay more attention to how they operate their business instead of concentrating on insignificant dress code violations by their employees they would greatly improve their customer base and profits.
Just one more reason not to visit their substandard stores.
Terry12
That policy has been in place for over 15 years.

My understanding is that the issue of free speech displays, religious beliefs, and corporate rights is an area not necessarily so clearly defined. For example, a Sikh cannot be made to take off a turban, even though clearly related to his beliefs. Neither can he be denied a job because he wears a turban. A Catholic can neither be told to take off a crucifix worn around the neck, nor denied a job for wearing one. A similar issue exists, I believe, with a Star of David. The company, by waiting so long to assert the employee was violating company policy would need to show why now, the issue is related to the display previously allowed. My guess is that this dispute will be allowed, by the company, to quietly disappear before any changes are made. Internally, I am sure some management person is being questioned as to why this was allowed to become an area of concern.

@Bry
Nice try pretending the story is about the flag. The employee did not follow the company dress code. The button he was wearing was not approved by his employer. They offered him several alternatives with the flag, even one with the words "United We Stand" but he wanted his own. The fact that he wore the button for a long time doesn't change the fact that it violated the company's dress code that the managers finally decided to enforce. Unemployment was his own choice.

Nice try on your part, do you not belive in the "pledge of Allegiance that goes with the American flag? Are they not the words on the button? The plegdge goes back to the early 1950's. The fact that he had wore the button for a long period of time does pay a fact, if it was such a problem then why didn't management stop it on day one. As you have stated "they offered him several alternatives with the flag" so that says its all about the word GOD now. You keep looking at him as "Unemployed" and I'll keep looking at him as someone that will stand up for his flag and country no mater what the price is. Thank you for pointing out that they gave him several alternative, then what is HD against the word God?
Independent in AZ
@Bry
Actually, the Pledge of Allegiance goes back to 1892. The words, "Under God" were added in the 1950's. However you want to look at it, the guy violated the company dress code. According to the Home Depot spokesperson, “The company’s dress code policy states that we do not allow noncompany buttons, regardless of their message or content.” The guy effectively quit by refusing to remove the button.
Prussian Patriot
Everyone in America has the right to wear whatever button they want. That right stops at the door of you employer. They have the right to tell you what you can and cannot wear. Whether you agree or disagree that's the way it is. You need to express yourself and your beliefs on your own time.
Bry
Did you see the same news report that is at the top of the page? He was wearing the button for around a year and ALL of the managers said nothing, one wanted to wear it. So by that management approved of it. It was not until he brought his book in that everything changed.
Terry12
Really. Did you see that? Did he have witnesses? Have you heard from the managers? There is always two sides to every story and we've only heard one. The T.V. station is looking for scoop so can we trust them? Maybe the store had gotten a complaint about the button from a customer. In order not to get sued maybe he then told Trevor he had to remove it. It wasn't within the dress code so Trevor should have removed it. He was warned about it. He refused and he was fired.
A. Capone
Maybe he was asked to remove the button because some of our citizens (say the native Americans) may not agree with "One Nation under God"
HD was just protecting themselves from legal action.
Terry12
And to think. this is all because of lawyers filing all these lawsuits about freedom of religion and freedom of speech. Who couldn't figured?
Bry
All the comments that I read are missing a main point, the botton is of the American Flag the same one that is flying outside of the HD store and the words are of the Pledge of Allegiance which goes with the flag and not a qoute from the Bible. If HD has a problem with that then they should take down the flag outside so we ALL can see what they stand for. As for his reading material it is still a book and if you ban one then they have to ban them ALL from the employees break area, I did not read that he was standing up and preaching to others about religion. HD is wrong for being PC about being or showing he is has patriotic feelings, dress code or no dress code. I think we all should wear flag bottons in every store including HD.
blacksmith
I don't care whether the guy was wearing the Shroud of Turin, if I own the business and I'm paying him to work in it and meet customers, I'm going to tell him he can't wear it.
You want to try and tell private businesspeople that they don't have any say in what their employees wear, or say, or do, while on the clock, well fine. Just don't bring that stuff around me.
Terry12
American flag buttons are allowed for wear by employees at Home Depot. Just not ones that have references to religious beliefs, or other groups. It doesn't have to be a quote from the bible.

My facts are true. I don't have to add conjecture to tell the truth. I have the experience to back it up. It is you that doesn't understand that in order to prove a point you have to know what you are talking about. If you are going to attack, don't bring a knife to a gun fight.

@Jrbjr99
It may not be a quote from the Bible, but the words "Under God" were not originally part of the Pledge. They were added in the 1950's at the request of religious groups. Please stick to the facts.
Jrbjr99
Terry 12 - It's not refering to a bible verse - It's refering to the Pledge of Allegiance. Please stick to the facts and try not to add conjecture to strengthen your attempt at an argument or point. It makes you appear desparate.
Bry
Yes Terry I misspelled two words so enjoy your superiority on spelling. But HD did terminate his employment over a button. Since you worked at HD and from what I can see are thier biggest suporter. Maybe you can tell me why HD has ALL that Religious money that has In "God We Trust" on it, they are not banning it from the store. Please educate all why from the news cast report from a religious community there is this HD store that takes the stand of the word God on something and takes this stand and please do not bring LAWYERS into it. HD has to show what they stand for to anyone that wants to work there or shop there and everyone has a right to do what they belive in. So if HD takes a stand then they have to deal with the public that will say no thanks I will shop some where else.

I though Home Depot was too busy allowing illegal aliens to hang around their stores to perform day labor to install their products and undercut legal competition to care about what their legal employees do. Home Depot, China's warehouse off wheels and now haters of the baby Jesus.

Holy shyte....I can't wait for Lowe's to do the same thing to someone. And you can rest assured that Lowe's Mgmt are enforcing their company dress code as this happens. Leave your religious beliefs at home.

Home Depot's finace/accounting department is in India, along with alot of other departments. They don't even hire American's to run the show people. Their customer service is in India. So unless you speak their native tongue, you cannot understand them. I boycotted Home Depot 6 years ago and I'm glad I did!!! LOWES will appreciate the business, I know they did from me.
