Controversy at Notre Dame

For decades, Notre Dame has stood out as the cultural jewel of American Catholicism-public evidence the great American experiment is compatible with, and indeed enriched by, distinctly Catholic values.

This President of ND who says he is a Catholic proves Crodicle Dundee right when he said "Sh-t for brains mate." He is all too ready to give to Caesar but not to God, what is God's (Respect for life).

As a parent of a recent Notre Dame graduate -- I was extremely disappointed in the university's decision to honor Obama. It's obvious that Jenkins was either "not thinking clearly" or, he feels Our Lady's University is bigger than the Catholic Church. Disgusting.

I attended Catholic grade school in the Fifties and Catholic high school in the early Sixties. One thing made abundantly clear to us, at that time, was that it is a mortal sin to attend a service of any Faith other than Catholic. This, I assume, was to insulate us from any non-Catholic doctrine. How times have changed ! Now the Catholic Church is inviting the most influencial proponent of non-Catholic policy to speak to graduates at our own hallowed university. I find this highly hypocritical. Obama supports abortion, including the hideous late term abortion. He has approved funding for abortions overseas and will sign legislation to force doctors to perform abortions, even if it is against their principles, or loose funding. This could ultimately force Catholic hospitals to close. Couple this with his funding of embryonic stem cell research and I can't imagine why he would be invited to address a Notre Dame commencement. I would encourage John Jenkins to cancel his speaking invitation to Obama because so many Catholics find it offensive. If however he does speak, I would encourage the graduates and alumni to turn their backs on this anti-Catholic values president.

Perhaps misspelled your name, Middlin, on my second post objecting to my first post being deleted -- it actually appeared briefly and then disappeared. The site does say they hold the privilege of doing that, but without any indication as to their guidelines. I intend to follow up on this and find out if reading/writing here is just a waste of my time. I don't email one of Fox's big draws anymore because my stuff is never "pithy" enough -- and I take "pithy" to be not only fairly brief, but also "controversial" and either attacking or supporting of the star of the show. After posting several thoughtful, different and short comments to that program and never seeing them or even getting replies (which would have satisfied me), I gave up. That was several years ago. I may do that with this site, as well. Our family is involved in one of the big tea party coalition groups, and we like to put our effort where it's appreciated. A family member is the one who tipped me off that my posting disappeared, which I have now confirmed. He's underwhelmed, as well. I will be following up.

One must earn respect. I cannot respect a man who has no respect for life. I don't care if his title is General, Senator, Judge, or President. You should not allow this supporter of baby killings to speak at Notre Dame unless you believe in abortion.

I'd love to know what other Catholic universities invited the president to speak at their graduation. Surely ND was not the only one. I also wonder how many of the people protesting the invitation are aware of the new fund ND set up (more than a month ago)- The Fund To Protect Human Life. So much for not caring about Catholic principles.

Not only is BO a pro-abortion activist, he is ALSO working to gut charitable giving so that HE controls which charities get money... he is doing this with his idea of limiting charitable giving by the "rich" who GIVE 44% of all money donated. If BO has the opportunity, he would love to shut down the pro-life non-profits (and the churches supporting them) and prop up the pro-abortion organizations in this country. No way that Catholics, NDU Alums, or parents paying for their kids education should put up with this... and they should withhold monetary donations to the university.

I think the president of Notra Dame should resign. He is not a practicing Catholic if he can invite a pro-abortionist, president or not, to speak at the commencement. The best solution would be for all the students (especially the graduating class) to boycott the graduation. We need to stand up for our beliefs.

Respect for the office? It"s just four walls and furniture.
Show respect for BO at a so called catholic university, when he is directly OPPOSED and in no way show respect for the most innocent of life.
And now YOU have to pay for abortions overseas,
Come on give me a break.
He is the nations #1 abortion dr.
If the mothers life is trully in danger, then I can see it.
That would be a very SMALL percentage.
But never abortion on damand for no reason,
Especially where the baby is brought to full term
legs, body, arms come out,but the head is left inside the mother, scissors are inserted at the back of the skull and opened ,then a tube is inserted into the head to suck the brain out till the skull collapses.
You going to invite BO to a catholic u.?????

The bishop over that diocese is doing the right thing by boycotting the speech. Obama was elected, not by true Catholics but by cafeteria Catholics. True Catholics vote as their conscience dictates, and the conscience of a true Catholic opposes infaticide and abortion, both of which Obama has voted FOR while in the Illinois State Senate.

This is exactly what I expect from President Obama, and sadly, what I expect from the administration of Notre Dame University, which has been kissing up to the secularsfor years. Bishop D'Arcy of South Bend needs to cut ND loose from ecclesial designation. He has the power, and he needs to use it.

All you NDU alumni, stop supporting the University monetarily. Parents, do not send your children to NDU. I don't know how you can value the eternal souls of your children and pay your good money for your children to be miseducated. If you do not, you are part of the problem.

Face it, $ is the language of all college administrators. It is the only voice they listen to.

President Obama's appearance at Notre Dame University will further confuse the life issues Americans have grappled with for years, which is exactly what abortion advocates hope for. Americans once understood and valued all human life. We knew when life began and believed it was wrong to willfully terminate a life, especially for the sake of convenience. Over the years, abortion advocates took what we always knew to be true and turned it on its head, transforming abortion from a life issue into a legal rights issue. As a result of their efforts, the unalienable right to life granted to us by our creator has been set aside in favor of a constitutional right created by lawyers and judges that allows a woman to determine whether her unborn child lives or dies.

Once abortion advocates succeeded in the courts, they went to work on the minds and hearts of the American people. Those who oppose their views on abortion are accused of violating a woman's constitutional right to choose and nothing is more un-American than violating our sacred Constitution. By encouraging us to ignore the biological truth of when life begins, abortion advocates avoid answering the question they don't want us to ask: When does a human life become valuable and worthy of protection? When a woman decides it does.
