Science Czar: There Is 'Consensus' on Climate Change
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The science showing that greenhouse gas emissions from human activities are causing a dangerous warming of the world's climate is sound, President Barack Obama's top scientists said on Wednesday, despite controversial e-mails stolen from climate researchers.
E-mails from Britain's University of East Anglia, made public last month after being obtained by hackers, show climate researchers deriding global warming skeptics, who argue that the messages show that the researchers manipulated data to make climate change appear more definitive.
In the messages, researchers also asked other scientists to delete e-mails, apparently to avoid having them become public.
"There will remain after the dust settles in this controversy a very strong scientific consensus on key characteristics of the problem: global climate is changing in highly unusual ways compared to long experienced and expected natural variations," John Holdren, Obama's science advisor, told a congressional hearing.

Industrial emissions do NOT play any significant role in global climate. Mankind's contribution to warming is so infinitesimal as to be non-existent. Folks, the science is freely available. Just watch our posts, the libs and warmers can never answer why the troposphere is the cooler than current surface temps! Does that tell you anything? It means they don't have an answer! The troposphere would be hotter than the surface temps if CO2 warming was occurring!
Common Global Warming Fear Tactics
(1) Arctic Ice Cap is melting. It has, but Antarctica has been increasing in size!
(2) Glaciers are retreating globally. Yes, but evidence shows that glacial retreat started centuries ago and is continuing! Were there SUVs in the 1700s?
(3) CO2 is creating a greenhouse effect like venus! If this were true the troposphere should be hotter than the surface temperature. But, current surface temperatures are hotter than the troposphere.
(4) Global warming implies global! And yet warming north of the equator is greater than in the southern hemisphere.
(5) Temperatures have been decreasing for the past ten years, not increasing!
There is NO man-made global warming, period. The very idea that man could alter the climate is so vane and ignorant that I cannot remain silent about the subject any longer. CO2 is a natural element, not a pollutant!!!!!!! A single volcano eruption has thrust more chemicals into the atmosphere than all of man's air pollution since the dawn of the industrial revolution combined!!!!! The climate is cyclical; it has been much warmer in the past than it is now. How did "Greenland" get it's name? Because the damn place used to be green!!!!! Glaciers advance and retreat, naturally! It is cyclical! Tree stumps were discovered beneath one such retreating ice sheet there recently-what do you think that means? It means that Greenland was once warm enough that trees had time to proliferate there long before George Bush destroyed the world as we know it...How can anyone believe the psycho-babble that poses for news these days; it is journalistic malpractice!!!!

You are right regarding the word fact but only in a pedantic sense, a theory can reach that stage where it is essentially considered fact and is used as such for work with other theories, such as the theory of gravity.
“The debate is over”
This is simply the first point made differently yes the debate is never truly over since new evidence can lead to changes in what previously considered to be true. However this does not mean that every theory is constantly shadowed in doubt and must not be trusted just incase we learn something new in the future.
“The consensus is”
This simply makes no sense; of course there can be a scientific consensus. Regardless of whether a scientific consensus is true or not there can be a group view held amongst scientists. One such example would be the current consensus regarding climate change.

"Scientific Fact":
No such thing. In science, a theory is formed which you then challenge with new data for the rest of eternity. The theory never aspires to "fact."
"The Debate is Over":
This is an indicator that what is being discussed is not scientific as in science the debate is never over.
"The Consensus is..":
Although you can have consensus in politics, you can not in science. For example, if the consensus was that two plus two equals five, the answer would still be incorrect.
Remember, "Belief is the end of the learning process."

I must have missed that announcement. It is known that green house gasses are one of the major players in how our climate functions this is a fact and needs no debate. The debate amongst scientist is regarding how all the pieces fit together at least that is my understanding of the situation. But the fact remains that green house gasses are and will continue to cause the planet to warm and we are continuing to produce a massive amount of at least one of the major greenhouse gasses.
These emails are just a silly distraction and have done nothing to discredit climate change evidence.

8+gigatons of CO2 are pumped into the atmosphere by anthropogenic means. This is added to the entire concentration of naturally occurring CO2 to comprise the current atmospheric concentration of CO2 which is 0.038%. So when you say the "debate amongst scientist is regarding how all the pieces fit together" you are correct. That's the entire isse in a nutshell. There can be no consensus without a full understanding and we don't fully understand how climate works.

I am perplexed as well. How could anyone look into the "just the slightest little bit" and not be? Consider the following: 1. Entire data sets have been thrown out because they showed a cooling trend. 2. Data tricks were employed to show a warming trend. 3. Scientific journals were ostrasized for publishing papers that were at odds with AGW (one editor was even fired at the request of these scientists). 4. Emails were deleted in order to avoid FOI requests (a criminal offense in the U.K.). It's just bad science and bad behavior. Think of it from the believer's point of view: if AGW is real...these researchers have damaged the science and might have set-back the needed changes for god knows how long.

Perhaps you are correct. But this is a forum and posting is what we do. Hopefully, someone will begin digging and discover how much opposing data is actually available. Or how much of the IPCC's report has already been challenged for a huge variety of issues including software errors and faulty/defective temperature guages in the field. But you are right in the respect that some people just refuse to keep an open mind or simply refuse to even consider that the truth may not be on their side.

You seem to think the argument is simply whether or not there is global warming going on. Everyone sees that there is climate change occurring, but that has been happening since day one. The bone of contention is whether this change is man made. The liberal argument is that there is a concensus by top scientist that it is indeed man made. That consensus has been debuncted. The evidence has been tampered with, therefore their conclusions are bogus.

I do feel a warming coming on, not global warming, but a warm fuzzy feeling, maybe not unlike Chris Mathews tingley feeling he felt during the last election. My fuzzy feeling comes from the thought that if the libtards keep all this BS up it's going to be a great year for conservatives in 2010.
