Canada has begun preparations to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan in 2011.
Maj. Cindy Tessier said Friday that the chief of Defense staff, Gen. Walter Natynczyk, has ordered preparations to get under way that would see Canada's 2,800 troops removed from southern Afghanistan in the summer of 2011.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper's government has said it will not extend Canada's military mission even if President Barack Obama asks.

I don't know why i'm so shocked by comments like the ones on this thread. I still remember when America was the country of freedom and tolerance and leadership. What happened to you guys? When did you become so reactionary and narrow-minded as to slap around one of your only remaining friends? How quickly you forget that we were one of the only nations that sent troops to Afghanistan. You know, that little war to find Osama Bin Laden that we were fighting while you guys went after the imaginary WMD in Iraq.

What happened? Well , fOX nEWS happened...then fOXnEWS.com....and now America has the center of right wing intolerance, fOX nATION - any questions?

The same imaginary WMD's that Bill Clinton, John Kerry and Canada the UN reported/ claimed to have and you think freeing 40,000,000 people and Canada was not only nation that sent troops to Afghanistan I believe there were 13 nations
MarcKB
Wow. That is some revisionist history on you there CwBell. Most of the world fought the crazy lies about WMDs. Anyone who did support the theory was doing so based on made-up "evidence" manufactured by Cheney and his team. Go back and read the old news stories from around the world. When anyone objected to the WMD theory, America threw a hissy fit (remember "Freedom Fries"?!)

I suspect that Canada has seen the writing on the wall, luckily for them they do not have to wait til 2012 for change.Makes it most important for Americans to be ready and make the change in Washington beginning 2010.

Wow, and you wonder why people don't like Americans.
Canda has been commited to the mission since day one. We are apart of a handful of the 28 NATO countries that have committed troops to the mission. Our troops are COMBAT troops! Our fatality rate is over 7% (total fatality divided by total number f troops on ground at any given time) compared to 5% for the US. A much larger percentage of our military is involved in the mission than the US military. If you want more friends, stop criticizing your best ally.
Fox should write the full story. A tribute to the Canadian effort in the directionless mission in Afghanistan would be a nice start. The posters detracting from the Canadian effort are either malicious or uneducated. Fox, as a news organization should at least try to put some effort into educating its readers do they don't come off like a bunch of HillBillies.

you are peeing in the wind here John, the majority of the posters here fall under the "stupid F_ckin yanks" banner.

As an independent free nation, Canada can do what it wishes. As an American, I am disappointed by the decison from Prime Minister Steven Harper. I do not blame him entirely. I blame President Barack Obama for he has not stated what is our purpose in Afghanistan. If it is not victory then what is it? Will he answer? I do not believe he will. Because he will not answer, Stevem Harper made his decsion abiet a wrong one.
MarcKB
Of course you would bring it back to Obama. In fact, the Canadian parliament voted to withdraw long before Obama was elected. The main reason was Canada's disappointment that so few other NATO members committed combat troops, preferring instead to chicken out by not allowing their troops to engage the enemy. Of course, if America had been fighting the real war in Afghanistan instead of the made-up one in Iraq, more countries might have lent support.

Well hockey season is here and all the Canucks have to go home. Love it when I hear the coalition phrase tossed around as if all our allies are standing with us shoulder to shoulder. Was that a bullet-gotta go!
MarcKB
Shame on you for not doing a bit of research first. Canada is withdrawing because A) too few other Nato nations are participating with combat troops and we're tired of pulling more than our weight, and B) America spent so much time spinning it's wheels in Iraq while we were fighting the real war in Afghanistan that the Canadian people are sick of it.
MarcKB
Um. Noseguard, who do you suppose you are protecting us from? Canada requires less defence spending because we spend on defence, not offence. If America had not spent trillions on a completely unjustified war in Iraq and a "missile defence" system that has never, ever worked (and never will), you could cut your budget in half too.
noseguard
News flash. The Americans ae tired of paying through the nose towards our defense budget so Canada can rely on us to defend her,. Want to know the percent of Canada's budget to Defense? About 4 %. They don't have to spend because we protect their ungrateful asses..

...canada never has been worth much.....

Time to disband NATO. If other nations aren't going to pull their weight, our dollars should stay at home.
