Aren't You Glad You Didn't Buy a Toyota Prius?

Toyota says it is recalling about 437,000 Prius and other hybrid vehicles worldwide to fix brake problems - the latest in a string of embarrassing safety lapses at the world's largest automaker.

"I don't see Toyota as an infallible company that never makes mistakes," President Akio Toyoda said at a press conference Tuesday in Tokyo. "We will face up to the facts and correct the problem, putting customers' safety and convenience first."

With the Prius announcement, the number of vehicles recalled globally by Toyota Motor Corp. has ballooned to 8.5 million, including for floor mats which can trap gas pedals and faulty gas pedals that are slow to return to the idle position. The 2010 Prius wasn't part of the earlier recalls.

There have been about 200 complaints in Japan and the U.S. about a delay when the brakes in the Prius were pressed in cold conditions and on some bumpy roads. The delay doesn't indicate a brake failure. The company says the problem can be fixed in 40 minutes with new software that oversees the controls of the antilock brakes.

"Let me assure everyone that we will redouble our commitment to quality as the lifeline of our company," Toyoda said.

My wife's old cell phone caused interference on her car radio, our Nutone home system, and would cause pumps on sleep number bed, with remote control to activate. What's the chances of phones messing with the care computers or sensors? Anyone else seen similar issues?

I was a lifelong Chevy lady . . until GMC took the Kenyan-in-Chief's bailout. Ford didn't. If I were in the postition to buy a car, it would be a Ford or maybe a Toyota. It's moot, as I don't drive anymore. lol

Let me think...oh, yeah, not too long ago, my Chevrolet was recalled, my GMC before that was recalled. Our Thunderbird had the motor rev issue and it was recalled. Let me think...most of my cars over the past 35 years have been recalled for something. Love Toyota's and I don't care they joined the group of recalls!

Note all the salesmen on this site trying to pump up their dwindling sales product. This error is going to be helpful to all car dealerships. As Toyota was just a little too arrogant of their product. They don't consider any room for haggling the price down. Said it before and I'll say it again. After four toyota products. The quality is not the same as it was.
TOYOTA is OVER PRICED,
OVER RATED,
AND OVER ADVERTISED.

A Prius is a marvel of engineering ingenuity and technology. I have driven one and it is like driving a computer. That said, I have owned, over my life, 12 automobiles and 6 of them were Toyotas. It is somewhat unlikely that I would purchase anything but a Toyota, but one that has more carrying capacity than a Prius.

When Prius owners finally realize that they will have to own their cars up to 11 years to make back the added cost for it being a Hybrid it makes far less sense to own one. It is a good step toward reducing fuel costs - but not if the initial price makes it non-cost effective far beyond the average car's life expectancy.

I would not own a hybrid due to the issues with the toxicity of the battery when one is done with it. Worse thing to dispose of, so GREEN they are NOT. But I do own a RAV 4 Toyota and LOVE IT! I would NEVER buy an American car - they just don't come close to the classiness of a Japanese car. So sorry....

The Administration should be giving Toyota a big wet one for taking the spotlight off of Gov Motors huge failures and wasting our money. It's still a global marketplace and GM will still have to compete. Now that Toyota has temporarily lowered the bar for Gov Motors, let's see if they can compete. I doubt it.

I do think this problem is limited to Toyota. I will not mention the US maker of the car until we are successfully able to make contact with the corporate office.
Two month ago, my friend complained about her car's gas petal (2007 made in the US) locking in a down position prior to starting her car. So far, she has not experienced the problem of the gas petal sticking while driving but she does experience the problem of the gas petal being locked in a down position prior to her starting her car. Some time it takes a while before she can get the gas petal to release in a up position. I was thinking it was her floor map and told her to removed it. She removed her map but she is still occasionally experience the problem. We had someone look at the car but they couldn't find anything wrong. She experienced the problem several more times and I was not sure what she was experiencing until it happen while using her car. This is a terrible feeling if you did not know that your gas peal was locked in a down position prior to putting your car in drive and releasing your foot from the brake. I almost wet myself when it happen to me. I simply forgot that she told me that her gas petal sometime locked.
This time, I told her to take the car back to the dealer. The dealer claims that her gas petal is working fine and she maybe over reacting to the Toyota. At that time, we did not know any them about the problem with Toyota's gas petal.

Don't buy NEW Government Motors cars, Chrysler cars, or even Ford like I have, if you must have one make sure to buy used ones like I did so the money goes to the current owner rather than to union thugs. We can put them out of business or force these companies to go to Right To Work states where people appreciate a job and work hard rather than bite the hand that feeds them and drive up costs that get passed on to consumers.

This 'drive by wire' is BS. What would they expect to gain (except higher costs)
by going 'high tech'.....(electronic 'boxes') instead of old fashioned "Push Rod". When they can't make an electric window last more than 2 years, I will not presume to be safe in an rectifier controlled braking mechanism.

I had three rental Prius's over the past year. Two times, I've had issues where the brakes malfunctioned and would not allow the car to operate. With one vehicle it was so bad I have to have the rental car towed back to Hertz. They got 40+ MPG and when they ran, then they ran good. But the brake issues made the car undependable. Regardless, I can't help thinking that Government Motors and the secreative, racist, radical, marxist, idealogical, usurper in the White House and his team of Chicago thugs isn't somehow behind the Toyota recall disaster.
