University Prohibits Student from Flying the American Flag
DURHAM – The proud son of a retired Army officer, Conner MacIver put his patriotism on display at the University of New Hampshire earlier this month by hanging an American flag outside his dorm window.
That lasted about two weeks.
Last Thursday school officials ordered him to remove the flag after someone complained it violated dorm policy that blocks students from hanging anything outside their window.
"I'm so infuriated about it," said MacIver, 19, a freshman from West Ossipee. "This is America and I should be able to hang an American flag."
UNH's dorm policy bans: "Television or radio antennae and any other objects which are placed outside the room window or anywhere on the exterior of the building or adjacent grounds."

Hey Everyone, Guess what, this isn’t about American Flag, it’s about a student breaking university resident hall policy of hanging material outside of the window. If he really wants to continue to display the flag, why doesn’t he just display it on the inside of said window? It would still be visible to the campus, but would not be violation of policy. (This was the solution for a similar policy close to 20 years ago when I was in college.)

This country is sick! I am not a R nor a D but an I. But I'm an equal opportunity I in that I dislike all politicians, D or R, equally! I prefer R because I am not aware of any Marxist and there are many in the D. We, the conservatives, will at the very least be majority proof in 2010. We will be done with O in 2014. We need to send all the do-nothing congressmen home after that, set term limits, make the jobs far less attractive by limiting expense budgets, pork, healthcare, pension, etc and send them home after 2 terms. Then let's go after the judiciary through a constitutional amendment or whatever we must do to do away with any life time appointments. The government, all 3 branches are out of control. We the people MUST take the country back.

People please read the entire article. I served in the USMC for 14 years and some bases had similar rules. The kid is handling this better than you so called adults. Why does every topic here has to have hateful rhetoric and name calling. There's a right way and a wrong way to handle these types of situations. I saw the interview and I applaud his parents because this kid is bright and has some common sense.

He can try to change the policy. He signed a contract. If there were a policy banning flying the flag I'd be against it just as much as you are. It's not banning the flag. This issue is not about denying patriotism or first amendment rights or anything like it. Sure it's out there but Fox has you acting on a headline. There are rules in many a place which don't allow you to put anything outside of your window. It's a policy issue. Change the policy.

fasten or display it in a way that will permit it to be damaged or soiled.

Just saw the young Mr. Maclver being interviewed on Fox and Friends. Naturally thought he was going to be a rabid conservative jerk, I was wrong. The UNH student made a good solid point, was respectful of his school and admitted he was at odds with school dorm policy. He was going to try to change that policy through the system made available to students. Good for him. Now, the beady-eyed guy interviewing him came across as a jerk, kept trying to make more of it than there was. Here's hoping Mr. Maclver succeeds.
